About Us

image of bicycle riders with the Golden Gate Bridge as background SF State Community Sailing is a sailing instruction program on beautiful Lake Merced in San Francisco, California. With close proximity to the Pacific, this freshwater lake enjoys the steady winds that have made San Francisco famous for sailing. During the week long day camps participants will not only learn about sailing and have fun but they will also gains skills and knowledge applicable to other situations, such as learning about the aquatic environment and wildlife, basic mathematics of sailing, water safety practices, boat maintenance, as well as teamwork and socialization with other classmates.

Beginning in 2003, San Francisco State University began offering community summer sailing camps for youth through one of our partner organizations, America True. With our desire to foster the community’s opportunity to sail, we began offering an enhanced sailing program in 2007. Today we focus primarily on programs for youth ages 8-15, but hope to offer options for other community members in the future. Join us, and let us help you realize the joys of sailing.

Sailing is an activity that all should have access. It is our mission to introduce this great sport and all its educational benefits, to persons of all ability/disability levels and all socio-economic backgrounds through careful instruction, appropriate equipment, and tuition scholarships. For information on scholarships contact us. SF State Community Sailing is committed to education about sailing for all in our community.

San Francisco has been heralded as a premier sailing destination around the world. Unfortunately, the majority of citizens of this great region were unable to experience the excitement and educational benefits that sailing offers. In 2003 SFSU began offering community sailing instruction on Lake Merced. Initially, the project was funded through grants from America True, the CA Dept. of Boating and Waterways, the SFSU College of Health and Human Services and the Dept. of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism. SFSU with began a summer sailing camp for youth at Lake Merced and over 150 students participated in our first year. We have grown and today SF State Community Sailing provides outreach instruction to individual family members and to youth groups, such as the YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, SF Unified School District and nonprofit neighborhood groups.
