Achievements
The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism has a number of accomplishments to be proud of in the fall 2008 semester. Below are just a few we completed in the last five months:
- Instituted our new department name, Recreation, Parks and Tourism
- Received approval to official Institute status (giving it official University recognition)for our own Public Leadership Institute (PLI)
- PLI hosted more than 2,500 SF Unified School District children and other youth in their programs
- Exceeded our student class enrollment FTES target, thanks to faculty taking more students in their classes and from growing demand for our classes
- Faculty brought in over $70,000 in research grants from last summer through December 2008
- Received approval to change of our undergraduate degree name to a B.A. in Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
- Received approval for revising our Youth and Human Services Nonprofit Administration Certificate
- Hosted over 120 SF Bay Area youth and family members (many low income) in our self-supporting summer Community Sailing Program
- Weathered the budget crisis with minimal loss of classes in spring
- Faculty member was on Executive Committee of California Tourism Industry Association
- Faculty served on SFSU Academic Senate (University’s highest faculty governing body)
- Saved many thousands of dollars due to AOC Barbara Enes’ adroit bookkeeping and attention to detail
- Experienced a large net increase in both undergraduate and graduate majors
- Welcomed our newest faculty member, Dr. Pavlina Latkova
- Faculty presented numerous papers at national and state conferences
- Faculty published journal articles, one new textbook and several chapters in other books
- Tall Ships Educational Academy for Girls in our department hosted 7 teenage girls last summer and will have 15 this spring. Also hosted 7 in their Foster Guardian program
- Faculty completed the first ever large scale visitor sponsored research of Golden Gate National Recreation Area
- One member received the “Best Research of the Year” award for his professional association
- Developed a new color grad student recruiting flyer and marketing plan
- Instituted a second Internship Scholarship in memory of Ryan Jones
- Approved major revisions to our undergraduate curriculum and course rotation
- Approved a new REC 225 Communications and Information Technology class in the core
- Approved new REC 640 Recreation Use in National Parks class to expand our park management offerings
- Implemented a new REC 670 Advanced Conference and Event Planning class
- Expanded and utilized input from our Department Advisory Council
- Submitted all final grades on time
- Completed book orders in time to have department receive a $1000 credit
- Faculty served on important governance and policy organizations at SFSU including: SFSU Center for Teaching and Faculty Development
